Chafurdão

The Chafurdão the Lancheiras in the municipality of São João Baptista (District de Castelo Vide , Portalegre District ) belongs to the group of Europe- Kraggewölbebauten dry stone , which in Portugal are popularly referred to as Chafurdão.

The Chafurdão of Lancheiras is a hut that was originally used by farmers or shepherds as a shelter, possibly also as a sheepfold. The monument located in the Parque megalítico dos Coureleiros has not yet been classified.

The round buildings rarely more than 3.0 m high have a diameter between 3.5 and 10.0 m. Your ceiling has the shape of a spherical cap on the inside . It is the result of a technique in which slabs of granite or slate are arranged in cantilever vaults . The joints between the panels are filled with smaller stones, without traces of mortar. At the top, the structure is closed with a movable plate that facilitates the exchange of air if necessary. A door and sometimes a small window opening are the connections to the outside. The architecture is very similar to old iron breeches .

Although the buildings are not very old in origin (the oldest dated from 1733), the history of the structures is a mystery. Very few have been dated so far. Some are in the vicinity of anthropomorphic rock tombs .
