São João Baptista ( actually São João Batista according to the legal spelling agreement from 1990 ) is a municipality in Portugal , in the Alentejo region . The municipality covers part of the urban area of Castelo de Vide and the surrounding area.

In addition to the historic center Castelo de Vides, which partly belongs to the municipality, are u. a. the megalithic complexes located in the rural parts of the municipality are known, which can be found frequently in the entire region, including the Antas da Coutada de Alcogulo , the Anta do Alcogulo II and the Anta do Alcogulo III or the vaulted building Chafurdão das Lancheiras . history

A large number of Antas document a prehistoric settlement. The current district was first created during the medieval Reconquista , as part of the settlement that was formed around the castle of Castelo de Vide. The district then developed mainly with the Jewish community, which flourished here especially from the beginning of the 16th century. Buildings such as the characteristic fountain ( Fonta da Vila ) bear witness to this phase.
