Gavião [ ɡɐviˈɐ̃u ] is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( Concelho ) in Portugal with 4132 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
The Romans settled here, motivated by the fertile soil. Today's place was created during the Reconquista and the associated resettlement policy in the 12th and 13th centuries. A castle was built here, and King Sancho I gave the area to the Hospitaller Order . King Manuel I granted the place city rights in 1519 . The independent district since then was dissolved in 1895 and Nisa was incorporated in order to be the seat of its own district again since 1898 .
Culture and sights
The Museu do Sabão museum shows the history of soap and the tradition of soap production in the district. In the village of Domingos da Vinha, in the municipality of Belver, the Museu de Domingos da Vinha local history museum is dedicated to the local traditions of country life.
Medieval markets are held in the Castelo de Belver , built in 1194 and rebuilt in 1390 . Below the castle is the river swimming pool ( Portuguese : Praia fluvial ) of the Quinta do Alamal . You can also swim at the Barragem de Belver reservoir . The dam, built in 1952, also offers fishing and a wide variety of water sports, including windsurfing and sailing.
