Atalaia is a locality and former municipality in the Portuguese region of Alentejo .
history
Today's place was probably built during the settlement during the Reconquista . In the 12th century, the current municipality under the name Guidintesta belonged to the Knights of the Order of Malta , who probably also founded the town of Atalaia.
Atalaia was part of Belver County . In the course of the administrative reforms after the Miguelistenkrieg in 1834, the Belver district was dissolved in 1836, and Atalaia has belonged to Gavião ever since.
administration
Atalaia was the seat of a community of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Gavião in the Portalegre district . The community had 138 inhabitants on an area of 19.44 km² (as of June 30, 2011).
The community consisted only of the place of the same name.
In the course of the territorial reform of September 29, 2013 , the municipality of Atalaia was merged with the municipality of Gavião to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Gavião e Atalaia .
