Belver is a small town ( Vila ) and municipality in the Portuguese region of Alentejo . The place lies on the Tagus River and is best known for its medieval castle Castelo de Belver and for the Belver reservoir . Other attractions include a. the Museu do Sabão Soap Museum and the Núcleo Meseológico , which is dedicated to the local traditions of carpet weaving and linen and wool making.
history
Antas and other finds prove a prehistoric settlement of the municipality of Belver, especially the Anta do Penedo Gordo in the village of Torre Fundeira.
The present-day place Belver emerged in the course of the new settlements during the medieval Reconquista and the subsequent defense against the nearby neighbor Castile . King D. Sancho I gave the area called Guidintesta with a deed of gift dated June 13, 1194 to the Order of St. John or Hospitaller . One of the conditions was the construction of a castle on a hill on the right bank of the Tagus, whose name Belver (modification of Bela Vista , dt: beautiful view) was determined by the king himself. Gualdim Pais , who was trained in building castles, built this castle, which was probably completed in 1212.
The castle remained an important base of the Hospitaller Order in Portugal until it was moved to Crato (around 1340). Nuno Álvares Pereira enlarged Belver Castle in 1390.
King D. Manuel gave Belver renewed city rights on May 18, 1518 and made it the seat of a district. In the 17th century, the district only included the towns of Belver and Comenda .
In the course of the administrative reforms after the liberal Miguelistenkrieg in 1834, the Belver district was dissolved in 1836 and incorporated as a municipality into the Mação district. Belver has been a municipality in Gavião County since 1898.

Belver has its own train station on the Linha da Beira Baixa railway line , which leads to Guarda in the north and Entroncamento in the south, where it connects to the rest of the country's rail network. There is also a Linha da Beira Baixa stop at the Belver reservoir.
Street
About 5 km north of the junction of the A23 motorway in Domingos da Vinha (Belver municipality), Belver has a connection to the country's trunk road network. The subordinate national road N244 runs through Belver and connects the place with the district town of Gavião, which is about 5 km south, and with Mação, about 10 km north .
Local public transport
The municipality of Belver is served by bus lines belonging to the Barraqueiro Group, Rodovária do Alentejo, and connects Belver u. a. with the district town of Gavião.
