Dom Gualdim Pais ( Latin also Gaudinus , Galdinus or Gualdinus , * 1118 in Amares , † October 13, 1195 in Tomar ) was a Portuguese crusader and founder of the city of Tomar.

Pais fought at the side of Afonso Henriques against the Moors and was knighted by him after the Battle of Ourique in 1139 . He moved to Palestine with the Second Crusade and fought there as a Templar for five years . In particular, he took part in the successful siege of the city of Gaza and the defensive battles in the Principality of Antioch .

After returning to Portugal, he was appointed fourth Grand Master of the Knights Templar in Portugal in 1157. In 1160 he founded the fortified monastery complex in Tomar , which became the seat of the order. The siege of Tomar by the Almohad caliph Yaʿqūb al-Mansūr in 1190 he repulsed and thus prevented the invasion of the rest of the country.

He died on October 13, 1195 in Tomar. His ashes were buried in the Igreja de Santa Maria dos Olivais , where his tomb slab is preserved to this day.
