Santa Maria do Olival Church

The Santa Maria do Olival Church is in Tomar , Portugal . The thirteenth century church is dedicated to Saint Mary. It is located in downtown Tomar, on the left bank of the Nabão . The building complex has been listed as a Monumento nacional since 1910 .

The master of the order Gualdim Pais had the church of Santa Maria do Olival built in the 12th century as a pantheon of the Templars . Inside are the Gothic tombs of Gualdim Pais and the Grand Masters Lourenço Martins and Don Gil Martins (first masters of the Knights of Christ ).

The church dates from the 13th century and is an important example of Portuguese Gothic. Light falls through a large rose window into the large three-aisled interior. The church shows the simplicity characteristic of mendicant orders , both inside and on the facade . It is believed that its builder was also involved in the construction of the Alcobaça monastery.

The square tower, which is slightly raised opposite the church, is believed to have led into a tunnel that connected the church with the Templar castle of Tomar.

Probably the church was built on the ruins of an old Benedictine monastery, the changes made in the 13th century gave it its current appearance.

During the reign of King Manuel I , the church was renovated and partially changed in the 15th and 16th centuries (south gallery).
