Comenda , formerly Castelo Cernado , is a municipality in the Portuguese region of Alentejo . The river swimming pool Praia fluvial da Ribeira da Venda and the nearby Roman bridge can be considered the main attractions of the municipality.
history
The traces of the earliest settlement in what is now the Comenda municipality go back to the Neolithic Age . A bridge over the Ribeira da Venda has been preserved from Roman times .
The first modern settlement in today's municipal area was probably a village called Vila Franca in the 16th or 17th century . The parish church was there until 1755, when it was probably damaged by the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 , remains can be found there to this day. The place is said to have been abandoned at the time, after the outbreak of the plague , and the present-day town was established about 5 km further. The municipality was called Castelo Cernado for a long time and at that time had 245 inhabitants in three villages.
