The Montargil dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Montargil ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Portalegre district . It dams the river Sor , the right (northern) source river of the Sorraia , to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem de Montargil ). The eponymous municipality of Montargil is located about one kilometer upstream from the dam on the right side of the reservoir. About ten kilometers southeast of the Montargil dam is the Maranhão dam .
The project to build the dam began in 1954. The construction was completed in 1958. In addition to irrigation, the dam is also used to generate electricity. It is owned by the Associação de Regantes e Beneficiários do Vale do Sorraia .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a dam with a clay core. Its height is 48 m above the foundation level (36 m above the river bed). The crest of the dam is at a height of 83 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 427 m and its width 12 m. The volume of the structure is 858,000 m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 36 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 765 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 1,200 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 500 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 80 m (maximum 80.75 m during high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 16.46 km² and holds 164.3 million m³ of water - of which 142.7 million m³ can be used. The minimum congestion target is 65 (or 64.9) m.
power plant
A Francis turbine is installed, which is located in an engine house at the foot of the dam. The average annual production is 5.9 million kWh .
