Ourém [ oˈɾɐ̃i ] is a city in Portugal , in the Santarém district in Portugal. It has approx. 4,991 inhabitants (as of 2004) . Fátima, a Catholic pilgrimage site belonging to the Ourém region, is known worldwide .
history
The place was known as Abdegas among the Moors until it was conquered by the Arabs in 1136 by D. Afonso Henriques , who later became the first king of Portugal . From then on it was named after a nearby castle Aurem, from which the current name developed. Ourém received its first town charter in 1180.
The third Count of Ourém, Nuno Álvares Pereira , secured the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal with the victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. The fourth Count of Ourém, Alfonso de Braganza, invited the royal council, the Cortes, to come here .
After the surrounding areas of the region suffered considerable damage from the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 and the Napoleonic invasions in the early 19th century, Ourém grew into a small town called Vila Nova de Ourém. In the course of the various administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution of 1822 and the Miguelistenkrieg Ourém became the seat of an independent district in the middle of the 19th century. In one of his parishes, in Fátima , an apparition of Mary is said to have taken place on May 13, 1917. As a result, one of the largest pilgrimage sites in the Catholic world came into being here, with several million visitors annually.
In 1991 the previous small town ( Vila ) was elevated to a town ( Cidade ).
Sports
The women's football department of Atlético Ouriense is well known nationwide . She won the national championship of Portugal in 2013 and 2014 . The CD Fátima is one of the other football clubs in the district .
