Rui Manuel Sousa Valério SMM (born December 24, 1964 in Vila Nova de Ourém , Portugal ) is a Portuguese religious and Roman Catholic military bishop of Portugal .

Life

Rui Manuel Sousa Valério first attended the Minor Seminary in Fátima before joining the Montfortan religious community in 1984 and beginning the novitiate in Santeramo in Colle . He studied philosophy at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome and Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University , where he obtained his licentiate . Sousa Valério put on 6 October 1990, the perpetual profession from and received on 23 March 1991, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

Subsequently, Rui Manuel Sousa Valério worked as a pastor in the parish of Castelverde di Lunghezza in Rome before he became military chaplain at the Naval Hospital in Lisbon in 1992 . In 1993 he became parish vicar in Castro Verde and in 2001 also superior of the local Montfortaner branch. From 2007 to 2011 Rui Manuel Sousa Valério was parish vicar in Póvoa de Santo Adrião and instructor of the postulants of the Montfortans in Lisbon. From 2008 he was also military chaplain of the Naval Academy in Alfaiates . Rui Manuel Sousa Valério became pastor in Póvoa de Santo Adrião in 2011 and dean of the Deanery Loures - Odivelas in 2014 .

On October 27, 2018, Pope Francis appointed him military bishop of Portugal. He was ordained bishop by the Patriarch of Lisbon , Manuel Cardinal Clemente , on November 25, 2018 in the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon. Co- consecrators were his predecessor and bishop of Porto , Manuel da Silva Rodrigues Linda , and the bishop of Santarém , José Augusto Traquina Maria . The inauguration took place on December 4, 2018.
