Cityscape

history

The community was probably founded by the crusader João Ramires after participating in the siege of Lisbon in 1147. In 1295 the construction of the Mosteiro de S.Dinis monastery began , which subsequently gave the place some importance, for example due to the presence of Queen Philippa of Lancaster . With the dissolution and expropriation of all religious orders after the Liberal Revolution in 1822, Odivelas' importance waned.

In Pontinha was the high command of the Movimento das Forças Armadas , the group of army officers who overthrew the authoritarian Estado Novo with the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974 and reintroduced democracy in Portugal. With the increasing growth of the greater Lisbon area, Odivelas also grew considerably.

After the place was raised to a small town ( Vila ) in 1964 , Odivelas received the status of a town ( Cidade ) in 1990 , and in 1998 became the seat of an independent district ( concelho ).
