Alcobertas is a town and municipality in Portugal . The place is about nine kilometers north of the district town of Rio Maior on the eastern flank of the Serra dos Candeeiros .
Of particular importance is the megalithic chapel of Santa Maria Madalena , one of the ten largest chapels of this type on the Iberian Peninsula .
history
Megalithic finds prove a prehistoric settlement, in particular an approximately 5,000 year old Anta from the Neolithic Age . The place name goes back to the Moorish times, and developed from the Arabic al-coble for "small tower".
On July 4, 1536 Alcobertas became an independent municipality. It belonged to the Alcanede district until its dissolution on October 24, 1855. Since then, Alcobertas Rio Maior has been affiliated.

economy
The production of poultry and pork is the mainstay of Alcoberta's economy. In addition, the shoe industry, construction industry, trade, and especially the mining of rock, especially basalt and limestone and its processing, should be mentioned.
Agriculture, which continued into the 1970s, has lost a lot of its importance. Some viticulture and the production of olive oil still play a role, but the cultivation of vegetables, cereals, beans, potatoes and fruit is now only a sideline.
