final
August 12, 2017, 8:15 p.m. local time (9:15 p.m. CEST )
The 2013 world champion Vítězslav Veselý from the Czech Republic did not reach the final. The closest favorites included the two Germans Thomas Röhler as Olympic champion in 2016 and fourth in the World Cup in 2015 and Johannes Vetter as Olympic champion in 2016. Both topped the world's best list of the year. Other title contenders were the 2015 world champion and 2016 Olympic runner-up Julius Yego from Kenya, the 2012 Olympic champion and 2016 Olympic third-party Keshorn Walcott from Trinidad and Tobago, and Tero Pitkämäki from Finland - including 2007 world champion, 2013 runner-up and third place in the World Cup from 2015. Jakub Vadlejch from the Czech Republic and Andreas Hofmann from Germany, who were high in the world’s best-of-the-year list, also had great opportunities.
Vetter developed a clear lead after the first round with a throw of 89.89 m. Röhler was second with 87.08 m, ahead of Wolcott with 84.48 m. But in lap two it got tighter. Röhler improved to 88.26 m, Vadlejch achieved 89.73 m and was only five centimeters behind Vetter. With his third litter Pitkämäki increased to 86.94 m and was fourth. There were no changes in the next two test series.
In the last round, Petr Frydrych's spear flew to 88.32 m. He was the second Czech in this final and displaced Röhler by six centimeters from the bronze place. Otherwise it stayed right at the front with the intermediate result after round three. Johannes Vetter became world champion. Silver and bronze went to the two Czechs Jakub Vadlejch and Petr Frydrych. Thomas Röhler was fourth ahead of Tero Pitkämäki. The Greek Ioannis Kiriazis came in sixth, Keshorn Walcott came in seventh. Andreas Hofmann finished eighth.
