Alexandru Mihăiță Novac (born March 24, 1997 in Adjud ) is a Romanian athlete who specializes in the javelin throw . In this discipline he is the holder of the national record.

Athletic career

Alexandru Novac first competed in the national junior javelin championships in 2013 and was U18 runner-up and bronze medalist in the U20 age group. In May 2014 he qualified for the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing. In June he became the Romanian U18 champion. In the qualification of the Youth Olympic Games in August, he threw the javelin to 77.61 m, making it into the final as the athlete with the greatest qualification distance. With the distance he ranked third on the all-time youth world best list (U18). In the final three days later he was just under four meters below his qualifying distance and won the silver medal with 73.98 m. Since the 2015 season, Novac has been competing with the final casting weight of 800 grams. In the summer he started at the U20 European Championships in Eskilstuna, where he finished tenth with 69.94 m. Before that, he had set up distances of more than 70 meters during the season.

In 2016 Novac competed at the U20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz, where he finished fifth. In May 2017 he threw for the first time in a competition over 80 meters and was first Romanian champion for the first time in July and then fourth at the U23 European Championships , again in Bydgoszcz. In August he took part in the World Championships in London, where he was eliminated in qualifying. In July 2018, Novac set a new national record of 86.37 m in a competition in Nembro, Italy. In August he stayed well below this distance at the European Championships in Berlin and was eliminated as 17th overall in qualification. In July 2019, he won the silver medal at the U23 European Championships in Gävle with 81.75 m . At the World Championships in Doha in October he threw a good meter further, but in 13th place narrowly missed the entry into the final of the top twelve.
