In the preliminary and semi-finals, the Australian Sally Pearson had shown herself very strong again after two years of injuries. She was the 2011 World Champion, 2013 Vice World Champion and 2012 Olympic Champion . In this form, she was again one of the closest favorites. There were also the US Olympic runner-up in 2012, Dawn Harper-Nelson, the Olympic runner-up in 2016 Nia Ali, also USA, the US world record holder Kendra Harrison with the fastest lead time, the Belarusian World Cup third in 2015 Alina Talaj and Germany’s Pamela Dutkiewicz who had run strong in the semifinals. Defending champion Danielle Williams from Jamaica was eliminated in the semifinals.
Harrison was best off the starting blocks. She led wafer-thinly in front of her two compatriots Harper-Nelson and Christina Manning. Sally Pearson was still a little behind in fourth place, but quickly found her rhythm and irresistibly pulled past her competitors to the world championship title. Dawn Harper-Nelson crossed the finish line in second place after her good start. The following places were extremely tight. With a strong performance on the last section of the track, Pamela Dutkiewicz won the bronze medal ahead of Kendra Harrison and Christina Manning. There were only two hundredths of a second between Dutkiewicz and Manning. Alina Talaj was sixth ahead of Nadine Visser and Nia Ali from the Netherlands.
