The women's 100-meter hurdles at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held on August 9 and 10, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, Athens .
The world champion was the 1996 Swedish Olympic champion Ludmila Engquist , who had already won the world championship title in 1991 for the Soviet Union under her then name Lyudmila Naroschilenko . Silver went to the reigning European champion Svetla Dimitrova from Bulgaria , who had also won the bronze medal in 1994 with the 4 x 100 meter relay in her country. The Jamaican Michelle Freeman , who won the 1996 Olympic bronze and the 1993 World Cup bronze with her country's sprint relay teams, came third. She had run the national record with 12.53 s in the run-up, which she had improved by a hundredth of a second in the semifinals. In the final, she missed this record by nine hundredths of a second.
