The women's 4 x 400 meter relay at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held on August 9 and 10, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, Athens .

Germany became world champion ( Anke Feller , Uta Rohländer , Anja Rücker , Grit Breuer ).
Second place went to the United States with Maicel Malone and Kim Graham . Kim Batten (final) and Jearl Miles Clark (final) as well as Michele Collins and Natasha Kaiser-Brown, who were also used in the preliminary stages .
Bronze went to Jamaica with Inez Turner , Lorraine Graham , Deon Hemmings (final) and Sandie Richards as well as Nadia Graham, who was also used in the run-up .

The runners who were only used in the preliminary run also received the corresponding precious metal. In contrast, only the athletes who actually ran were entitled to records.

The existing world championship record was not set and not improved at these world championships.

In the final on August 10, the bronze medalist Jamaica with Inez Turner , Lorraine Graham , Deon Hemmings and Sandie Richards set a new national record with 3: 21.30 minutes.

Preliminary round
