The men's high jump at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held on August 4 and 6, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, Athens .
The winner of the Cuban world champion in 1993 , two-time runner-up ( 1991 / 1995 ), Olympic champion in 1992 and world record holder Javier Sotomayor . Second place went to the Polish vice world champion from 1993, World Cup third from 1995, Olympic second from 1996 , Olympic third from 1992 and Vice European Champion from 1994 Artur Partyka . Bronze went to the Australian Tim Forsyth .

qualification
August 4, 1997, 6:00 p.m.
35 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification height for the direct entry into the final was 2.28 m. Ten athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the two next-placed athletes - they had crossed 2.26 m in the first attempt - to twelve jumpers (highlighted in light green). Two other athletes who had only mastered 2.26 m with their second jump, on the other hand, were among the eliminated participants.
