Martin Buss

Martin Buss (born April 7, 1976 in Berlin ) is a former German high jumper .

In his youth he was a footballer and started athletics in 1993 at the age of 17 with the Neuköllner Sportfreunde in Berlin . After just two years, he finished second in the Junior European Championships (2.19 m) in 1995, and came ninth in the 1997 World Athletics Championships in Athens. In 1999 he finished fourth at the World Indoor Championships in Maebashi and won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Seville . At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, he was absent due to a ruptured Achilles tendon .

At the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, at a height of 2.33 m, he had one more failed attempt than the two Russians Vyacheslav Voronin and Yaroslav Rybakov . When both competitors mastered this height and Buß broke, he let himself hang up 2.36 m for his two remaining attempts, which he was then the only one to jump over. He became the only German high jump world champion to date.

After a seventh place at the European Championships in 2002 , he was increasingly having problems with his knee. He underwent four operations and paused until January 2005, but was not able to continue his old performance afterwards.

Martin Buß is 1.95 m tall and weighs 82 kg. He initially started for OSC Berlin , from 2001 for TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen and from 2005 for Barmer TV from Wuppertal . In October 2006, he announced his retirement from top-class sport and began training for the higher service with the police . He is married, has three sons and lives in Berlin-Neukölln .

In 2016, Buß took part in the new edition of the family duel .
