The men's high jump at the World Athletics Championships in 1987 was held on September 5 and 6, 1987 in the Olympic Stadium in the Italian capital, Rome .

In this competition, the silver medal was awarded twice because of the tie between two athletes, even after the failed attempt rule was applied. The shared second place was occupied by two high jumpers from the Soviet Union . The Swedish Olympic runner-up in 1984 and world record holder Patrik Sjöberg became world champions . The two silver medals went to defending champion Hennadij Awdjejenko and the reigning European champion Igor Paklin .
