The men's 50 km walk at the 1987 World Athletics Championships was held on the streets of Rome on September 5, 1987 .

In this competition, the walkers from the GDR achieved a double victory. World champion was the 1980 Olympic champion and reigning European champion Hartwig Gauder . He won ahead of the defending champion and holder of the world record, Ronald Weigel . Bronze went to the Vice European Champion from 1986 Vyacheslav Ivanenko from the Soviet Union .

Record improvement

World champion Hartwig Gauder from the GDR improved the existing World Cup record on September 5th by 2:15 minutes to 3:40:53 h.
