Raúl González (athlete)

Raúl González ( Raúl González Rodríguez ; born February 29, 1952 in China, Nuevo León ) is a former Mexican walker and Olympic champion .

After he had finished 20th in the 50 km walk at the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 at the age of 20 , he was able to establish himself as a world class walker over the next few years. In the 20 km walk he reached 5th place at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and 6th place in 1980 in Moscow . In 1977, 1981 and 1983 he won the World Cup, the so-called Lugano Trophy.

In 1978 (3: 52: 23.5 h) and 1979 (3: 41: 38.4 h) he improved the world record in the 50,000 m track. In 1978, González improved the record twice in the 50 km walk on the road. The second record of 3:41:20 h was also his personal best. At the World Championships in Helsinki in 1983 , he was fifth.

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , the strong goers from the Soviet Union and the GDR were missing because of the Olympic boycott , and Raúl González won gold over 50 km. In the 20 km distance he won silver behind his compatriot Ernesto Canto .

Raúl González is the most successful athlete in Mexico at the Olympic Games . He was trained by Jerzy Hausleber .
