The women's 10 km walk at the 1987 World Athletics Championships was held on the streets of Rome on September 1, 1987 .

This discipline was new to the world championship program. For the first time since last year's European Championships , a walking competition was also held for women at a major international championship.

World champion was Irina Strachowa from the Soviet Union . She won ahead of the world record holder, Australian Kerry Saxby . Bronze went to the Chinese Yan Hong .

Note:
At that time, records were not kept in marathon running and street walking because of the different track conditions with the exception of championship records.

World champion Irina Strachowa from the Soviet Union set the first world championship record in the race on September 1st with 44:12 minutes .
