doping

In women's walking there was another doping case at these world championships. The Ukrainian Olena Shumkina was banned for three years because of the values in her biological passport. All results since May 2011 have been canceled, affecting their results at three World Championships and the 2012 Olympic Games .

initial situation

One of the favorites was first of all the Chinese Liu Hong, who set a new world record in June 2015 . She was the World Champion in 2011 , World Championship -Third of 2013 and Olympic bronze medalist 2012 . Her strongest opponents were her compatriot Lü Xiuzhi, fifth in the 2012 Olympics, the Italian World Cup fifth and Olympic sixth Elisa Rigaudo, the Ukrainian Vice European Champion Ljudmyla Oljanowska and the European Championship third Anežka Drahotová from the Czech Republic.

Course of competition

World Champion Liu Hong, China

Right from the start, the Chinese Lü Xiuzhi and Liu Hong put pressure on their rivals at a high speed for the conditions in Beijing . Together with Drahotová they formed a group of three who were at the top by a few seconds. Oljanowska and the Italian Eleonora Giorgi soon formed a chasing group. There was no longer a big main field behind either, the walkers formed larger or smaller groups in which they contested the competition. After a few kilometers, Drahotová found it difficult to keep the pace of the two Chinese women. At five kilometers they were two seconds behind, with another five seconds followed by Giorgi, Oljanowska and Rigaudo, who had caught up with the two. Behind was the Brazilian Erica De Sena a few seconds behind.

Lü and Liu now increased their lead bit by bit. Soon it was more than twenty seconds, while behind them a group of five came together with Giorgi, Oljanowska, Rigaudo, Drahotová and De Sena, which, however, did not last long. Drahotová also had to let go of this group and at fifteen kilometer Oljanowska set out to pursue the leading Chinese women alone. The Ukrainian was even able to shorten the gap by a few seconds, but did not come close to the front. The next pursuers were only the two Italians Giorgi and Rigaudo, who were disqualified after three warnings each. Half a minute behind Oljanowska, the Portuguese Ana Cabecinha followed ten seconds ahead of a group of three with the Italian Antonella Palmisano, De Sena and Drahotová.

The victory was only between Lü and Liu. Oljanowska was a long way behind the two, but was so clearly ahead of her pursuers that the bronze medal could hardly be taken from her. Finally, the two Chinese made it to the stadium together. Liu Hong had now taken the lead and was heading for her second world title. Lü Xiuzhi reached the finish line in second, the two separated by less than a second. Less than half a minute behind them, Lyudmyla Oljanowska won the bronze medal. Their lead over fourth Ana Cabecinha was more than a minute. Antonella Palmisano was fifth five seconds behind Cabecinha, followed half a minute later by Erica De Sena in sixth. Seventh place went to Brigita Virbalytė-Dimšienė from Lithuania, eighth place to Anežka Drahotová from the Czech Republic.
