Starting position

Like over 5000 meters , the two top runners Tirunesh Dibaba and Meseret Defar were no longer there. The favorites in this 10,000 meter run again included runners from Africa such as the double world champion in 2011 over 5000 and 10,000 meters Vivian Cheruiyot, the Ethiopian Belaynesh Oljira as third in the 2013 World Cup and fifth in 2012 and Gelete Burka, the Ethiopian 2012 Olympic champion over 5000 m.

Race course

August 24, 2015, 8:35 p.m. local time (2:35 p.m. CEST )

Not only the start of the race was very slow in this competition. The whole thing developed into a 1000 meter run with a 9000 meter run-up. The pace was so calm that only one runner, Nazret Wilou from Eritrea, was unable to keep up on the first six kilometers. The individual 1000 meter sections were run through in times of around 3:10 min. Afterwards, at about the same pace, some participants fell behind, but in the last thousand meters, nine runners were still in the lead with a small margin over the pursuers.

The American Molly Huddle led the field and now accelerated away from the front. Eight athletes were still together when the last six hundred meters went. Huddle led in front of Burka, Cheruiyot, the Ethiopian Alemitu Heroye, the two Kenyans Sally Kipyego and Betsy Saina and the two Americans Emily Infeld and Shalane Flanagan. Huddle had become faster, but this pace did not demand everything from the participants. On the home stretch of the penultimate lap, the athletes were sometimes running in rows of two and three, and the athletes were now looking for their best starting positions. On the next back straight, Burka took the lead. Before the finish curve, Cheruiyot attacked the Ethiopian and the two separated from their rivals. Cheruiyot walked the last hundred meters by a narrow margin. Burqa followed her, followed by Huddle a few meters away. Infeld was only a little behind in fourth place ahead of Kipyego and Flanagan. In the end Vivian Cheruiyot prevailed in the fight for the world title, Gelete Burka came in second place. Behind it, Molly Huddle had already raised her arms halfway up in celebration of the medal, but with the last few steps Emily Infeld pulled past her on the inside lane and won bronze. Sally Kipyego was fifth ahead of Shalane Flanagan. The ranks seven and eight went to Alemitu Heroye and Betsy Saina in that order.
