Starting position

The clear favorite was the British Jessica Ennis-Hill. She was the heptathlete with the clear highest number of points of all participants, she was the 2012 Olympic champion , 2011 world champion and 2010 European champion . Her fiercest competitor was the Canadian Brianne Theisen-Eaton as runner-up in 2013 . There were other candidates with good prospects for top positions such as the Dutch Vice European Champion from 2014 Nadine Broersen, the Belgian European Championship third from 2014 Nafissatou Thiam, the Latvian Vice European Champion from 2012 Laura Ikauniece-Admidiņa and the World Cup fourth from 2013 Claudia Rath from Germany. The French double European champion in 2012 and 2014 , also Olympic gold medalist in 2012, Antoinette Nana Djimou Ida, did not start . The Ukrainian defending champion Hanna Melnytschenko was registered - now under her new name Hanna Kasjanowa - but did not compete either.

Summary

In the first discipline, the 100-meter hurdles , three female heptathletes undercut the 13-second mark. The fastest was Nadine Visser from the Netherlands, who achieved a personal best with 12.81 seconds. Ennis-Hill with 12.91 s and Theisen-Eaton with 12.98 s were not far behind.

The best high jumper was Katarina Johnson-Thompson from Britain with 1.89 m. Here, too, Ennis-Hill was among the runner-up. With her, six other athletes mastered 1.86 m, including Broersen and Thiam. Theisen-Eaton lost a few points by jumping 1.80 m. Ennis-Hill took the lead with 2192 points. Thirty points behind was Johnson-Thompson, who in turn was 31 points ahead of Visser. Ukrainian Anastassija Mochnjuk was only one point behind. The gap between Ennis-Hill and Theisen-Eaton in fifth was 87 points.

Thiam was the only participant to exceed the 15-meter mark in the shot put with 15.24 m. The Ukrainian Alina Fjodorowa reached 14.98 m. Broersen also hit a strong 14.59 m, Vetter came to 14.24 m. Ennis Hill - 13.73 m - and Theisen-Eaton - 13.70 m were not among the best here. But with 2968 points, Ennis-Hill kept their lead. Behind them, Thiam had improved to second, 34 points behind. Broersen followed four more points ahead of Mochnjuk - 55 points behind the leader - and Theisen Eaton - 89 points behind Ennis-Hill.

In the 200-meter run , which concluded the first day, the two Britons Johnson-Thompson were ahead with 23.08 s and Ennis-Hill with 23.42 s. Visser with 23.78 s, Theisen-Eaton - 23.94 s - and Ikauniece-Admidiņa - 23.97 s remained under 24 seconds. So there was a British one-two lead in the overall standings after the first day. Ennis-Hill had 4005 points, Johnson-Thompson was eighty points behind. Third was Visser, 134 points behind Ennis-Hill. Theisen-Eaton was already 140 points behind in fourth. Mochnjuk was fifth - 168 points, followed by Thiam - 210 points - and Broersen - 225 points. But on the second there should be some postponements.

In the long jump , as a specialist in this discipline, Rath had the longest jump with 6.61 m. Theisen-Eaton was in second place here with 6.55 m and was able to make up many points. Mochnjuk also achieved a good distance with 6.51 m. Ennis-Hill followed behind with 6.43 m. The next best long jumper with 6.32 m was Ikauniece-Admidiņa. In the interim standings, Ennis-Hill continued to lead with 4990 points. Theisen-Eaton was now second again, 102 points behind. Mochnjuk was in third place - 143 points behind Ennis-Hill, fourth was Rath - 211 P - ahead of Visser - 226 P, Broersen - 298 P, Thiam - 302 P - and Ikauniece-Admidiņa - 315 P.

The Greek Sofia Yfandidou achieved the greatest distance in the javelin throw with 56.19 m. Some athletes followed with placements in the front area: Ikauniece-Admidiņa 53.67 m and Broersen 53.52 m, Vetter 51.78 m. All other female heptathletes stayed below the 50 meter mark, the best of them was Thiam with 49.31 m. Further back were Theisen-Eaton with 42.54 m, Ennis-Hill - 42.51 m and Rath - 41.31 m. Thus, the point spacing before the last exercise was significantly reduced. Ennis-Hill was ahead with 5706 points. Broersen was second, 86 points behind. They were followed by Theisen-Eaton - eight more points behind - and Ikauniece-Admidiņa - six points behind Theisen-Eaton. It looked like a duel for silver between the Dutch, Canadian and Latvian, as the fifth placed Thiam was 71 points behind Ikauniece-Admidiņa. Then followed Mochnjuk - 41 P on Thiam, Vetter - 42 P on Thiam, the Hungarian Györgyi Zsivoczky-Farkas - 43 P on Thiam - and Rath - 63 P on Thiam.

Over 800 meters , Rath was the only female heptathlete under 2:10 minutes with 2: 09.66 minutes. This improved her to fifth place in the final ranking. This was followed by the leading Ennis-Hill with 2: 10.13 min and the so far third Theisen-Eaton with 2: 11.52 min. That was enough for Brianne Theisen-Eaton to win the silver medal in the end. Nadine Broersen was so far behind with 2: 16.58 minutes that she slipped from medal rank to fourth place, because Laura Ikauniece-Admidiņa ran almost three seconds faster with 2: 13.79 minutes and thus secured bronze. Györgyi Zsivoczky-Farkas was sixth overall, Anastassija Mochnjuk seventh. Nadine Visser was eighth.

The world champion, however, was the favored Jessica Ennis-Hill, who finally had a lead of more than one hundred points.
