The Olympic Stadium in Tokyo in 2008

The heptathlon for women in the 1991 World Championships in Athletics was on 26 and 27 August 1991 at the Olympic Stadium of the Japanese capital Tokyo discharged.

The reigning European champion Sabine Braun from Germany became world champion . She won ahead of the Romanian Liliana Năstase . Bronze went to Irina Belowa from the Soviet Union .

The actual top favorite of this competition was the defending champion, Olympic champion from 1988 and world record holder Jackie Joyner-Kersee . She had won the long jump held the day before, but sustained an injury there. So she entered the heptathlon with an injury handicap. Still, she got excellent results in the first three exercises and was in the lead. In the 200-meter run , the final discipline of the first day, she had to drop out due to an injury and did not continue the now hopeless competition on the second day.
