The women's 1,500-meter run at the 1991 World Athletics Championships was held on August 29 and 31, 1991 in the Olympic Stadium in the Japanese capital, Tokyo .
With silver and bronze, the Soviet middle-distance athletes won two medals in this competition. World Champion was four times African champion ( 1988 / 1989 , each have 800 and 1500 meters ) Hassiba Boulmerka from Algeria . Second place went to the defending champion and Olympic bronze medalist in 1988, Tetjana Samolenko , who was also world champion over 3000 meters in 1987 , Olympic champion in 1988 and again world champion five days earlier. Bronze went to Lyudmila Rogacheva .

The existing world championship record was not set and not improved at these world championships. The four-minute mark was not undercut in the final either.
Preliminary round
August 29, 1991, 4:15 p.m.
The preliminary round was carried out in three runs. The first four athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the three fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the final. The three athletes, who obtained the right to take part in the finals over their time, were all recruited from the first heat, the fastest of the three preliminary races.
