Suzy Favor Hamilton

Suzy Favor Hamilton (born August 8, 1968 in Stevens Point , Wisconsin ) is an American professional former athlete who was mainly active as a middle-distance runner.

Life

Favor began running at the age of nine. She attended Stevens Point Area Senior High School, which she successfully graduated in 1986. As a student she was a three-time US junior champion in the 1500 m and a two-time gold medalist at the Pan American Juniors (1984, 1986). In 1991 she graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Madison with a bachelor's degree in graphic arts. Favor won nine NCAA singles titles from the University of Wisconsin – Madison . Together with Sally Kipyego, she holds the record in the history of the NCAA to this day. During her studies, she met her future husband, Mark Hamilton, whom she married shortly after graduating in 1991. As a student, she became NCAA Woman of the Year and won four Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year Awards , which are now named after her "Suzy Favor Awards". The couple settled in New Glarus , Wisconsin. A daughter was born in 2005.

Professional athlete

After graduating, Favor Hamilton took part in the following competitions:

  • Olympic Games in the USA team in 1992, 1996 and 2000
  • Seven-time participant in the US Athletics Championships
  • US record holder over 1000 m
  • US indoor record holder over 800 m
  • 1998 Goodwill Games bronze medalist

She reached fifth place at the 2002 World Cross-Country Championships on the short haul. This was the best place for a US runner ever. Favor Hamilton was the only American woman who ever achieved a world best time over 1500 m (year 2000 3: 57.40 min). She was number one in the US rankings in 1989, 1990, 2000, 2001 and 2002. Favor Hamilton also admitted that she had deliberately fallen in the 1500 m race of the 2000 Summer Olympics when it became clear that they would no longer win a medal could.
