The women's discus throw at the 1991 World Athletics Championships was held on August 29 and 31, 1991 in the Olympic Stadium in the Japanese capital, Tokyo .
The Bulgarian Olympic second in 1988 , third in the World Cup in 1987 , European champion in 1982 and vice European champion in 1986, Tsvetanka Christova became world champion . Silver went to Ilke Wyludda from Germany , who had become European champion starting for the GDR last year . Laryssa Mychaltschenko from the Soviet Union won the bronze medal.
The winner Zwetanka Christowa came second in the Olympic Games in the coming year and had to accept a four-year ban in 1993 after a doping offense. In 1997 she took part again in world championships and started again in 2004 at the age of 42 at the Olympic Games, but was eliminated in the preliminary round. In 2008 she died of lung cancer.

The Australian Daniela Costian set a new Oceania record in the final on August 31 with 66.06 m.
qualification
August 29, 1991, 7:00 p.m.
Thirty participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 64.00 m. Five athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the seven next placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 59.42 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
