Daniela Costian (born April 30, 1965 in Brăila ) is a former Australian discus thrower of Romanian origin.

In 1985 she won, still starting for Romania, the bronze medal in the discus throw at the Universiade in Kobe . In 1986 she tested positive for anabolic steroids and was banned for two years for doping . In 1988 she emigrated to Australia and obtained Australian citizenship in 1990 .

At the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 she won the bronze medal behind the Cuban Maritza Martén and Zwetanka Christowa from Bulgaria with a width of 66.24 m . A year later she won the silver medal behind the Russian Olga Tschernjawskaja at the World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart in 1993 with a width of 65.36 m . At the Commonwealth Games in Victoria in 1994 , she finally won the gold medal in the discus throw with 63.72 m in front of Beatrice Faumuina from New Zealand .

Later she was unable to build on her earlier successes on an international level. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , she was eliminated from the qualification with the discus.

From 1989 to 1995 she won the Australian championships in discus throwing seven times in a row and was three times Australian champion in the shot put. Before that, she had already won the discus throw in Romania in 1986. In her career, she set various records with the discus for Romania, Australia, Oceania and the Commonwealth .

Daniela Costian is 1.82 m tall and weighed 84 kg when she was active. She is married to her former trainer John Zanfi and has two children.
