The men's 100-meter race at the World Athletics Championships in 1991 was held on August 24 and 25, 1991 in the Olympic Stadium in the Japanese capital, Tokyo .
The US sprinters recorded a triple success in this competition. With Carl Lewis , one of the most successful athletes in sports history became world champion for the third time in a row. With his winning time he set a new world record at the same time. Lewis also won silver in the long jump and, like the other two medal winners in this competition, gold with the USA's sprint relay. Second place went to the previous world record holder Leroy Burrell . Bronze went to Dennis Mitchell .

Record improvement
The US world champion Carl Lewis equalized and improved his own world championship record:
- 9.93 s - equalization of the record in the first semifinals on August 25th
- 9.86 s - Improvement of the record by seven hundredths of a second in the final on August 25th
With his 9.86 s, Lewis set a new world record at the same time.
