Emmanuel Tuffour

Emmanuel Tuffour (born December 2, 1966 ) is a former Ghanaian athlete and multiple medalist at the African Games.

Sports career

After a second place in the 200-meter run at the African Championships in 1988 behind the Nigerian Davidson Ezinwa , Tuffour took part in the Olympic Games for the first time in 1988 and was eliminated in the 100-meter run in the quarter-finals. At the African Games in 1991 Tuffour finished third behind Frankie Fredericks from Namibia and behind Davidson Ezinwa. Over 200 meters he won silver behind Fredericks. In June 1992 Tuffour finished second at the African Championships over 200 meters behind the Nigerian Victor Omagbemi . Shortly afterwards, he reached the semifinals three times at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and missed the finals by just a hundredth of a second over 200 meters.

In 1993 he achieved his only final participation in a worldwide championship as a single starter, when he reached seventh place at the 1993 World Championships . At the Africa Games in 1995 Tuffour finished second behind Davidson Ezinwa over 100 meters. Over 200 meters he was defeated by the Nigerian Sunday Bada in 20.29 seconds by just 0.01 seconds. He won gold with the Ghanaian 4 x 100 meter relay. Also in his third Olympic participation in Atlanta in 1996 , Tuffour was denied a final, again he was eliminated three times in the semifinals. In 1997 he managed to reach the finals with the relay at the World Championships in Athens and in the final in fifth place a national record in 38.12 seconds.

Emmanuel Tuffour had a competition weight of 75 kg with a height of 1.78 m. He ran his best time of 10.07 s over 100 meters in Schriesheim in 1994 , his 20.15 s over 200 meters, which he achieved in Johannesburg in 1995, was and is the Ghanaian national record (as of 2009).

Tuffour trained for many years under Eckard Schweiger in Bremen at BTS Neustadt.
