The heptathlon for women in the 1987 World Championships in Athletics took place on 31 August and 1 September 1987 in Rome , Italy , instead.
25 athletes from 17 August countries took part in the competition. The athletes from the United States won two medals in this competition, gold and bronze. The gold medal was won by the 1984 Olympic runner-up Jackie Joyner-Kersee with 7128 points, which was a new championship record. Three days later she also became world champion in the long jump . The silver medal went to Larissa Nikitina , later Larissa Turtschinskaja, from the Soviet Union with 6564 points, and the bronze medal went to Jane Frederick with 6402 points.

The rating was based on the points table from 1985, which is still valid today. The seven disciplines of the heptathlon took place over two days:
- Day 1 (August 31): 100-meter hurdles , high jump , shot put , 200-meter run
- Day 2 (September 1st): long jump , javelin throw , 800 meter run
