Larissa Turchinskaya

Larissa Turchinskaya ( Russian Лариса Турчинская , maiden name Никитина - Nikitina, English transcription Larisa Turchinskaya ; born April 29, 1965 in Kostroma ) is a former Russian heptathlete who set a European record in 1989 with 7007 points.

It exceeded the 6000-point mark for the first time in 1983, but 6276 points were only enough for 8th place in the Soviet championships. In 1987 she won the Soviet championship for the first time with 6414 points. At the World Athletics Championships in Rome in 1987 , she won the silver medal behind Jackie Joyner-Kersee with 6564 points . In 1988 she could not qualify for the Olympic Games as fifth in the Soviet championships .

In June 1989 she won the Soviet Championships in Bryansk with a new European record of 7007 points, a number of points that only Joyner-Kersee had previously exceeded. Carolina Klüft broke the European record at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka . In July 1989 Turchinskaya won with 6,875 points at the European Cup of all-around fighters and a month later she won with 6,847 points at the Universiade in Duisburg.

On July 23, 1990, she finished second behind Jackie Joyner-Kersee at the Goodwill Games in Seattle. Turchinskaya was subsequently disqualified for doping and banned for two years.

Turchinskaya had competed for the Soviet Union until 1990, when she returned in 1993 she started for Russia. In 1993 she qualified second in the Russian Championships with 6415 points for the World Championships in Stuttgart . There she gave up after six disciplines.

In 1994 she won the Russian Indoor Championships in pentathlon and 14 days later she became European Indoor Champion in Paris. In the open-air season she was second behind Sabine Braun at the Götzis all-around meeting with 6596 points . This should remain her best heptathlon after her suspension expires. She finished second at the Goodwill Games in St. Petersburg and was fourth at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki with 6311 points, just 11 points away from the bronze medal of Polish Urszula Włodarczyk . In her last 6000-point heptathlon, she finished third in Talence in September with 6294 points.

In total, Turchinskaya achieved 26 heptathletes with more than 6000 points in her career.

With a height of 1.77 m, she had a competition weight of 70 kg.
