Carolina Klüft at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka

Carolina Evelyn Klüft (born February 2, 1983 in Sandhult , Borås municipality ) is a former Swedish athlete and was particularly successful in the heptathlon , in which she was among the world's best from 2003 to 2008 and in addition to an Olympic gold medal three times at world championships and twice at European championships could win. She also holds the current European record in the heptathlon with 7032 points (as of May 2017). Her U20 indoor world record in pentathlon with 4535 points from March 1, 2002 in Vienna was broken by the Ukrainian Alina Schuch on February 4, 2017 in Tallinn with 4532 points. After 2008 she was mainly active in the long jump and triple jump . She also competed in pentathlon , hurdles , relay and high jump and was able to record successes in national and international championships.

Career and Achievements

She already won titles at the Junior World and European Championships from 2000 to 2002 and at the European Championships in Munich in 2002 , setting the current junior world record in Munich. For this achievement, Klüft was awarded the Radio Sport Jerringpris by the listeners of Sveriges Radio .

At the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis , she won the gold medal with the Swedish record of 7001 points. For this achievement she was also honored with the renowned Svenska Dagbladet gold medal. She traveled to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens as a big favorite, as she led the world rankings by more than 200 points, and she lived up to her role as a favorite. She stayed just 47 points below her personal best and won the gold medal. She also took eleventh place in the long jump competition. Again, Carolina Klüft was unbeatable at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki , with 6887 points she relegated the French Eunice Barber and Margaret Simpson from Ghana to the places.

In front of her home crowd in Gothenburg, she also won gold at the 2006 European Championships with 6740 points . However, she clearly missed the European record she was aiming for of 7007 points from Russian Larissa Turchinskaya from 1989. This was not least because had to give up that Eunice Barber injury than their strongest rival for the title on the first day of competition and you therefore lacked the large continental competition, which is also at its big lead of 317 points on the second-placed Dutch Karin Ruckstuhl can be seen . Another increase followed at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka . With 7032 points she was 200 points ahead of Ljudmyla Blonska on the silver and over 500 points ahead of Kelly Sotherton on the bronze. With her European record she now occupies second place in the all-time world rankings.

In 2003 and 2006 she was named Athlete of the Year by the European Athletics Federation. To combat doping , she made a sensational proposal in 2007: The whereabouts of all athletes should be able to be determined at all times by means of an implanted chip or a GPS transmitter to be worn at all times. In addition, all doping tests should be made accessible to the general public on the Internet.

She was considered the favorite for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , but announced on March 18, 2008 that she did not want to compete in the heptathlon. She said she was in the mood for something new. She also hoped for less exhaustion and less media pressure. Instead, she wanted to focus on the long and triple jump disciplines. She later stated that she had no alternative. She was burned out and no longer had any motivation for the heptathlon. The decision was criticized by the Swedish public.

Klüft qualified for the games in both disciplines. In the triple jump she was eliminated before the final, and in the long jump she finished ninth in the final, which was very disappointing for her. In 2009, due to a stress fracture sustained the year before, she skipped the triple jump and focused on the long jump. At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu , she reached fifth place in the final.

At the European Championships in Helsinki in 2012 and the 2012 Olympic Games in London , she was unable to compete due to an injury. Although she announced that she would take part in the Finnkampen and the Swedish championships, she then announced her career end on August 25, 2012 due to the ongoing injury problems.

Carolina Klüft had a competition weight of 65 kg with a height of 1.78 m. Swedish fans call the athlete Carro and she was one of the most popular athletes in the country. She studied psychology , history and philosophy in Växjö . During her career, she had interrupted her studies and focused on athletics. She is married and lives with her husband, the Swedish pole vaulter Patrik Kristiansson in Karlskrona .

At the 2014 Winter Olympics , she acted as a presenter for the television programs of the Swedish provider Viasat .
