The men's 20 km walk at the 1987 World Athletics Championships was held on August 30, 1987 in the streets of Rome .

World champion was the Italian Olympic champion from 1980 , Olympic third from 1984 and Vice European Champion from 1986 Maurizio Damilano . Silver went to the Vice World Champion from 1983 , European Champion from 1986 and Vice European Champion from 1982 Jozef Pribilinec from Czechoslovakia . Third place went to the Spanish European champion from 1982 José Marín , who was also vice world champion in 1983 and in 1982 vice European champion in the 50 km distance.

Record improvement

World champion Maurizio Damilano from Italy improved the existing world championship record on August 30th by four seconds to 1:20:45.
