The men's 20 km walk at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place on August 7, 1983 in Helsinki , Finland .

60 athletes from 31 countries took part in the competition. The gold medal was won by the Mexican Ernesto Canto after 1:20:49 h. Silver went to the Czechoslovak Vice European Champion from 1982 Jozef Pribilinec with 1:20:59 h. The bronze medal was secured by Yevgeny Jewsjukow from the Soviet Union with 1:21:08 h.

Note:
At that time, records were not kept in marathon running and street walking because of the different track conditions with the exception of championship records.
