The women's 3,000-meter run at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place on August 8-10, 1983 in Helsinki , Finland .
31 athletes from 22 countries took part in the competition. The American Mary Decker won her first gold medal at these world championships with 8: 34.62 minutes. A second was to follow four days later over 1500 meters . Silver went to Brigitte Kraus from the Federal Republic of Germany , who set a German record with 8: 35.11 minutes. The bronze medal went to Tatjana Kasankina from the Soviet Union with 8: 35.13 minutes , who had already won three gold medals at the Olympic Games - 800 meters : 1976 in Montreal / 1500 meters: 1976 in Montreal and 1980 in Moscow .
