Wendy Sly (born Smith ; born November 5, 1959 in London ) is a former British middle and long distance runner .

Life

She celebrated her first international success by winning the silver medal in the 3000 meter run at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. At the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983 , she was fifth over 1500 m and 3000 m. She achieved personal bests on both routes.

Sly reached the peak of her career at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. In the 3000 meter run she won the silver medal in 8: 39.47 minutes behind the Romanian Maricica Puică (8: 35.96 min) and ahead of the Canadian Lynn Williams (8: 42.14 min). The race was especially remembered by the audience because of the fall of the favorite American Mary Decker after a collision with Zola Budd .

At the World Athletics Championships in Rome in 1987 , Sly finished eighth in the 3,000-meter run. Over the same distance she won the bronze medal at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Budapest in 1988 and reached seventh place at the Olympic Games in Seoul . She also won the 1988 Zurich New Year's Run . In 1991 she ended her competitive sports career.

Wendy Sly is 1.68 m tall and weighed 52 kg at competition times. She started for the Borough of Hounslow Athletics Club as well as for the Brooks Racing Team.
