Svetlana Ulmasowa

Svetlana Ulmassowa ( Russian Светлана Ульмасова , English transcription Svetlana Ulmasova ; born February 4, 1953 in the Uzbek SSR ; † April 6, 2009 ) was a Soviet athlete . The long-distance runner had her greatest successes in the 3000-meter run .

At the European Championships in Prague in 1978 , she won the title in 8: 33.2 min with a second advantage over the Romanian Natalia Mărăşescu . Four years later at the European Championships in Athens in 1982 she was able to successfully defend her title. With 8: 30.28 min she was three seconds ahead of Maricica Puică , again a Romanian. At the World Championships in Helsinki in 1983 Ulmassowa was fourth, after 8: 35.55 min she was less than a second behind the winner Mary Decker .

In the winter season, Ulmassowa never took part in the European Indoor Championships. Instead, she ran at the World Cross Country Championships . Here she was fifth in 1979, sixth in 1980, seventh in 1981 and sixth again in 1983. With the Soviet team she won gold in 1980 and 1981, and silver in 1979 and 1983.

In 1978, 1979 and 1982 she was the Soviet champion over 3000 meters. In these three years she was also best of the year in the world. In 1986 she won the Soviet 5000 meter title .

Svetlana Ulmassowa was 1.61 m tall and weighed 53 kg at competition times.
