initial situation
The Chinese walkers had done particularly well at the major championships of the recent past. Chen Ding as Olympic champion in 2012 and vice world champion in 2013 , Wang Zhen as Olympic knight and Cai Zelin as Olympic medalist were again among the favorites. In addition, the Spanish European champion , third in the World Cup and fifth in the Olympics, Miguel López, was to be expected.
Course of competition
August 23, 2015, 8:30 a.m. (2:30 a.m. CEST )
The high humidity and pollution conditions in Beijing were difficult for the walkers. Nevertheless, especially given these circumstances, the pace was not slow from the start. After five kilometers, the German Hagen Pohle led with a minimal lead of three seconds over a large group, which soon caught up with him again. In addition, many walkers at the front formed a large leading group, in which the three Chinese tried again and again to keep pace. Halfway through the course, Cai Celin led an eighteen-man top group with a run time of 40:20 minutes. Then Wang dared an advance and worked up to fifteen kilometers a lead of eleven seconds over the closest pursuers López and Andrés Chocho from Ecuador. The leading group had now completely fallen apart. Canadian Benjamin Thorne was fourth, seventeen seconds behind Wang, ahead of Chen - five more seconds behind - and Cai - three more seconds behind. Ukrainian Ihor Hlawan followed in fifth place, 31 seconds behind leader Wang.
But the competition was not yet over. Shortly after kilometer eighteen López caught up with the leading Chinese and then passed him right away. Chocho was no longer in the competition after his third warning. López was now increasing the gap to Wang, the pace on the second half of the route was again significantly higher than on the first ten kilometers. Miguel López couldn't take the victory away, in the end he became world champion with a fifteen second lead on second Wang Zhen. Bronze was won by Benjamin Thorne, who crossed the finish line 28 seconds after Wang. A little more than half a minute behind, Ihor Hlawan was fourth, ahead of Cai Zelin, who had recovered after a period of weakness. The Brazilian Caio Bonfim came in sixth ahead of Eider Arévalo from Colombia. Australian Dane Bird-Smith finished eighth.
