Claude Jourdan

Life

Since he came from a poor background, he was only able to start studying medicine in Montpellier relatively late . He was associated with Victor Prunelle , who was a professor in Montpellier until 1819. After Prunelle became mayor of Lyon , Jourdan became a curator at the Natural History Museum in Lyon, Musée Saint-Pierre, thanks to his support, and was its director from 1832 to 1869. Jourdan became professor of comparative anatomy at the École des beaux-arts in Lyon and in 1834 professor of zoology at the Faculté des sciences of the newly founded University of Lyon . Back then there was a scene in Lyon of amateurs interested in natural history and very active in science, some of whom came from wealthy merchant or industrial circles and who contributed to the museum's collections. Jourdan himself enriched the collection with numerous paleontological finds.

Mammoth by Choulans, Musée des Confluences Lyon

In 1859 he dug up the mammoth in Choulans (a district of Lyon). In 1861 he first described Deinotherium levius . He erstbeschrieb some mammalian species such as woolly and Acerodon and species like the sting rat Phyllomys blainvillii and the Western Irmawallaby . He himself collected in Trinidad, among other places.

The red flag elf Chaetocercus jourdanii (Bourcier 1839) is named in his honor.

In 1865 he became an officer of the Legion of Honor . He was a member of the Académie d'agriculture de France and a member of the Conseil départemental du Rhône. A street in Lyon is named after him.
