Musée des Confluences
The Musée des Confluences is a museum in Lyon that aims to convey "global knowledge with a focus on natural sciences". The new building was opened on December 21, 2014.
Location
Its name is derived from its location, namely at the confluence of the Rhone and Saône rivers , close to the Lyon city motorway, the A7 autoroute . It is accessible via the stop of the same name on line 1 of the Lyon tram .
Exhibitions
The museum aims to present the latest developments in science and, with its collections, would like to describe and make understandable the development, dreams and basic questions of human societies in time and space. It is particularly dedicated to anthropology and ethnology .
management
The director is Hélène Lafont-Couturier , who has already headed the Cité nationale de l'histoire de l'immigration in Paris and the Musée d'Aquitaine in Bordeaux . The scientific director is Bruno Jacomy.
Building history
The building was designed by the Viennese group of architects Coop Himmelb (l) au , who prevailed in an architectural competition in February 2001 against strong competition, including Steven Holl . The planning and construction time was 14 years and was therefore a decade longer than planned.
architecture
The building measures 190 meters in length, 90 meters in width and a good 40 meters in height. In the massive concrete base there are side rooms and auditoriums, the glass foyer above is the entrance hall for visitors. This is followed by three floors with windowless exhibition rooms, in which there is space for three permanent exhibitions and six temporary exhibitions , as well as studios .
costs
The costs originally estimated at 60 million euros were exceeded many times over at almost 300 million euros. The reasons for this are not on the part of the architects, but with the building owners: There were hardly any cost calculations in advance, the costs for the subsoil investigation were not included in the initial calculation, nor were special requests and the requirements of the insurance companies for the security of the building. Significant cost factors included the time-consuming assembly of 17,000 differently sized INOX panels and the effort required to stabilize the site.
