final
August 29, 2015, 7:30 p.m. (1:30 p.m. CEST )
The two-time world champion Mo Farah from Great Britain started the race as the favorite. His fiercest competitors were the runner-up world champion from 2013 Hagos Gebrhiwet from Ethiopia, the Kenyan World Cup third from 2013 Isiah Koech and his American training colleague Galen Rupp. The other Ethiopians and Kenyans represented in this final were also to be expected.
The race boiled down to a finale with a drawn out finish. The first kilometers were literally wasted away with Tom Farrell from Great Britain at the top - first km: 3: 02.04 min / second km: 2: 56.65 min. Then the Ethiopian Imane Merga took the lead, but the third thousand meters were not particularly fast with 2: 48.59 minutes. After 3200 meters, Farah took the lead surprisingly early. But he wasn't pushing the pace into really fast areas either. The fourth kilometer was completed in 2: 43.90 minutes. So the field stayed completely close together.
With two laps to go, Kenyan Caleb Ndiku took the initiative. Now began a long, fast-paced finish. The order was Ndiku before Farah, the Ethiopians Yomif Kejelcha and Gebrhiwet, Rupp, his compatriot Ben True and Merga. The field was now wide apart. In the final lap of the final lap, Ndiku and Farah separated more and more from their pursuers. Kejelcha, who was now passing Gebrhiwet, and his compatriot formed a second group. Rupp followed and after another gap, True. On the home straight, Mo Farah accelerated again and ran irresistibly to his renewed world title. The time for the last kilometer was 2: 19.20 minutes. Caleb Ndiku confidently defended his second place. Third was Hagos Gebrhiwet, who was able to prevail against Yomif Kejelcha in the battle for bronze. Behind them, the three Americans Galen Rupp, Ben True and Ryan Hill finished five to seven.
For Mo Farah it was his third world championship title over 5000 meters after 2009 , 2011 and 2013 and his second double victory over 5000 and 10,000 meters after 2011 and 2013. In 2009 he was also vice world champion over 10,000 meters.
