Albert Kibichii Rop (born July 17, 1992 ) is a Bahraini long-distance runner of Kenyan origin who specializes in the 5000 meter run .

Athletic career

In 2013 Rop set a new Asian record over 5000 meters at the Herculis in Monaco with 12: 51.96 minutes without having previously appeared in international championships . The following year he was fourth at the Continental Cup in Marrakech in 13: 36.62 minutes and won the bronze medal at the Asian Games in Incheon in 13: 28.08 minutes behind Katari Mohamad al-Garni and his compatriot Alemu Bekele . At the 2015 World Cross Country Championships in Guiyang , he finished eleventh after 35:59 minutes and won the bronze medal with the Bahraini team. He won the silver medal both at the Arab Championships in Manama and at the Asian Championships in Wuhan and only had to admit defeat to al-Garni. He qualified for the World Championships in Beijing , where he finished eleventh with 14: 00.12 minutes in the final . Then he won in October in 13: 23.70 min at the Military World Games in Mungyeon, South Korea . In 2016 he won the silver medal behind al-Garni at the Indoor Asian Championships in Doha in 7: 40.27 minutes and took part in the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro . There he classified himself in seventh place after 13: 08.79 minutes in the final .

At the 2017 World Cross Country Championships in Kampala , he had to end his run prematurely and was eliminated from the qualification at the World Championships in London with 13: 32.40 minutes . The following year he reached 13th place at the World Half Marathon Championships in Valencia and in August won the silver medal at the Asian Games in Jakarta behind his compatriot Birhanu Balew in 13: 43.76 minutes . 2019 he arrived at the cross country World Cup in Aarhus to 33:15 min to rank 23 and then prevailed in the United Arab championships in Cairo in 10,000 Meters and won silver over 5000 meters. Shortly afterwards he had to admit defeat to compatriot Balew again at the Asian Championships in Doha in 13: 37.57 minutes. He later lost this second place for violating the doping rules .

Doping ban

Shortly before the start of the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Rop was temporarily suspended by the independent AIU integrity commission of the World Athletics Association for violating the registration rules on whereabouts. At the end of March 2020, the AIU announced that it had banned Rop for two years from September 24, 2019. He was disqualified from April 11th to September 24th, 2019.
