He also presented during the IAAF Diamond League belonging Memorial Van Damme -Meeting in Brussels on 17 September 2011, a new American record in the 10,000-meter race with 26: 48.00 min and is thus the fastest non-African runner in the 10,000 meters and the second (after Chris Solinsky , 26: 59.60 min, 2010), which undercut the 27-minute limit. On May 31, 2014, at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, he improved his own record again to 26: 44.36 min, which is the fifteenth fastest time ever run over this distance.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, he won the silver medal over 10,000 meters behind his training colleague Mo Farah .

On February 13, 2016, Rupp won his marathon debut at the US Trials in Los Angeles in 2:11:13 h and thus secured his starting place for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .

However, the marathon took place at temperatures around freezing point and in rainy weather, so that Rupp, like most of the other favorites, had to give up the race. He started the Prague Marathon a few weeks later . In this race, Rupp was able to break away from his last African pursuer after 38 km and won the marathon in a time of 2:06:07 hours.
