The 2016 U.S. Athletics Olympic Trials took place July 1-10, 2016 at Hayward Field in Eugene , Oregon . They were organized by the USA Track & Field athletics association and were also the national championships.

Qualification for the Olympic Games

The trials served as qualification for the US team at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . For this, an athlete had to meet the qualification standard and, with three Olympic places to be awarded in the final ranking of the respective discipline, belong to the three best athletes with a fulfilled qualification standard.

Outsourced competitions

Three Olympic Trials competitions took place at a different time and place. The marathons were held in Los Angeles on February 13th , the 50km street walking on February 21st in Santee , California, and the 20km street walking on June 30th in Salem , Oregon .

m1Because Kyle Landon did not reach the qualification norm , the sixth-placed Ricky Robertson got the last starting place as the next best athlete with a fulfilled norm.
m2 Will Claye did not make the qualifying distance of 8.15 m, he missed it by one centimeter, and his best jump of 8.42 m was wind-assisted +5.0 m / s. Fourth was Marquis Dendy , who had also jumped 8.42 m, but lost in the second best jumps against Claye. He was called up to the Olympic team. However, he was unable to compete due to a leg injury. The fifth-placed Mike Hartfield started instead at the Olympic Games
m3All three hammer throwers did not meet the qualifying distance of 77 meters. But because only 23 athletes in the world achieved the norm, all three were invited by the IAAF to fill the field of 32 throwers.
m4 Curtis Thompson and Riley Dolezal hadn't met the norm. Instead, Sam Crouser (4th place) and Sean Furey (11th place) got the starting places; both threw the required distance in 2015.
