Michelle Carter (born October 12, 1985 in San José , California ) is an American shot putter .

Carter won the silver medal at the 2001 World Youth Championships in Debrecen and became World Junior Champion in 2004 in Grosseto . In 2006 she won the NCAA indoor championships. At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, she finished 15th.

Carter finished sixth at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin and ninth at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu . She won her first international adult medal in third place at the 2012 Indoor World Championships in Istanbul, which later became silver because of the doping disqualification of Belarusian Nadseja Astaptschuk . In London she finished fifth at the Olympic Games . At the World Championships in Moscow in 2013 , she missed the medal ranks in fourth place by one centimeter, then in 2015 in Beijing she won the bronze medal.

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Carter won the gold medal. In the last attempt, she achieved a personal best of 20.63 m, displacing Valerie Adams from the leading position.

Michelle Carter is 1.75 m tall and weighs 118 kg. She is coached by Jon Drummond , 2000 Olympic champion in the four-by-100-meter relay , and her father Michael Carter , 1984 Olympic second shot put and former football player .
